How To Choose & Use Your FlightScope Mevo+

How To Set Up Your FlightScope Mevo+

The FlightScope Mevo+ offers tremendous versatility. It’s a lightweight, portable launch monitor and simulator that you can easily transport between the driving range and your indoor setup. Operating the Mevo+ is straightforward, but how you use it and set it up will depend on your environment and space limitations.

Let’s look at some common setup scenarios to help you understand how the Mevo+ might fit in your situation.

Using the FlightScope Mevo+ Golf Launch Monitor Outdoors

One of the great advantages of a FlightScope Mevo+ is its small size. It’s lightweight and fits easily in any golf bag. That makes it a great device for using on the driving range. Other launch monitors are considerably larger and take much longer to set up. With the FlightScope Mevo+, you can start measuring shots within a couple of minutes.

Space requirements:

The most critical part of the outdoor setup is to make sure the Mevo+ is placed 8 feet directly behind your ball. After that, consult the FlightScope app to determine that your device is set at the correct tilt and the correct roll.

Software:

Before using the Mevo+, you’ll want to pair your phone or mobile device with your golf launch monitor. Depending on how you’re using the unit, you’ll choose one of three apps (more on that below). If you’re using the FlightScope Mevo+ as just an outdoor golf launch monitor, you’ll only need to download the FlightScope Golf app, which will allow you to view and store all of your shot-tracking information on your mobile device.

Next, you’ll want to check the app’s weather settings to be sure that they match the conditions you’re hitting in. For example, you can set the Mevo+ to measure shot data at varying elevations or in varying humidity, all of which will affect how far the ball flies. To get a reading reflective of your actual conditions, you’ll need to spend a few seconds adjusting the weather settings in the FlightScope Golf app.

Hardware:

The beauty of the Mevo+ is its simplicity. All you’ll need to bring to the range is the launch monitor itself and your mobile device.

Indoor Golf Simulator Setup

Not every golf launch monitor can also be used as a golf simulator, but the Mevo+ can. That, of course, means that in addition to recording your shot data, this device allows you to actually play simulated rounds of golf or target-practice games. Here’s what you’re going to need to enjoy accurate indoor golf.

Space requirements:

  • Room depth. You’re going to need a minimum of 16 feet in total room depth. The Mevo+ will need to be set up at least 8 feet behind the ball, and then you’ll need a minimum of 8 feet between the ball and net or screen to allow enough room for the device to accurately track the golf ball and measure things like spin and speed. Please note that higher swing speeds will benefit from more room depth. If you can really smash the ball, the Mevo+ is going to need a couple more feet to accurately measure the ball flight. So, better players likely need a little bit more than 16 feet of room depth.
  • Room width. We recommend a minimum of 10 feet of space between side walls. This should allow you enough room to comfortably swing without hitting the wall behind you. Now, if you want a setup that will allow for both righties and lefties to share the space without having to move the launch monitor/simulator, you’ll want at least 15 feet of room width.
  • Room height. Generally speaking, you need at least 9-foot ceilings to comfortably pull off an indoor golf simulator setup. Ten feet would be better. Of course, the size of the golfer and their swing path will alter those requirements. A tall golfer with a steep swing may require even more than 10 feet of ceiling space. On the other hand, a shorter golfer might be able to get away with less than 9-foot ceilings. To see if you have enough room, swing your driver (slowly at first!) in the space where you intend to set up your golf simulator.

Software:

The 2023 Edition FlightScope Mevo+ comes with access to a TruGolf E6 Connect software package that includes 10 simulated golf courses (6 with older models) for now for iOS and PC, 17 practice ranges, and online games. For Android or PC use or to access different courses and games, the device is also compatible with software options including the Golf Club 2019, GS Pro, Creative 3D, and Awesome Golf. Those additional software options will require paid subscriptions not included with the Mevo+ purchase.

If you just want to use your Mevo+ to record shot data or to capture video of your swing, you’ll only need to download the FS Golf or FS Skills apps. FlightScope Golf software is now available for your PC. It comes with the new Mevo+ 2023 edition. But you will need to purchase a $99 upgrade for older models.

Hardware:

With a mat, a net, a Mevo+, and a mobile device, you’ve got everything you need to start playing simulated rounds of golf indoors. Some people may choose to incorporate a projector and impact screen to really enhance the realistic experience. For the very best simulator setup, you’ll likely want to pay for a PC-compatible software upgrade and run your setup with a robust gaming computer.

DIY Golf Simulator Setup

There are many different ways to achieve a DIY golf simulator setup. You’ll need to consider your space and budget to decide what will work best for your situation. Here are some of the common components you’ll want to consider:

Do You Have To Put Metallic Dots on Your Golf Ball To Use the FlightScope Mevo+?

Your Mevo+ will come with a roll of 100 metallic dot stickers. These are designed to help the unit better read spin and speed in an indoor setting where there is less space between where the ball is hit and the net or screen that it contacts. For the most accurate indoor simulator readings, you will want to use the dot. You simply place the dot sticker on your golf ball and then position your ball so that the dot is facing the target.

You do not need to use the dot for outdoor use where the Mevo+ has much more room to track the flight of the ball.

You also should not use a dot for simulator putting. Instead, use a separate ball without a dot sticker.

Putting With Your Golf Simulator

The Mevo+ is one of our top picks for simulator putting. As you may know, some simulators don’t track putting, and others do a very poor job of it. But the Mevo+ can deliver some very accurate results so long as you have it set up correctly.

The most important thing to remember when tracking putts with a Mevo+ is that the device needs to sit on the same level as your golf ball.

The Mevo+ measures from about 8 feet behind the ball. A typical home simulator setup includes a hitting mat, which is generally several inches thick. If you set your Mevo+ up on the floor, a few inches below the surface of your mat, you will not get accurate putting results. That setup will work fine for measuring your full shots, but the Mevo+ needs to sit at the same level as the ball to capture putting data accurately.

So, when considering the Mevo+, make sure that you factor in having a large enough mat to allow your hitting zone and device placement to be on the same level.

Another tip for achieving your best setup is to choose a mat that’s long enough to allow you to roll the ball several feet after contact. This will allow the Mevo+ to reliably read the putt and give you the most accurate results.

New Face Impact Location Software Upgrade

Yes you read that correctly! Flightscope is releasing a Face Impact Location upgrade purchase option for all Mevo+ owners.

Impact Location is the measurement of the contact point of the golf ball on the club face relative to face center.

Here's what you need to know:

  • You must have the Mevo+ Pro Package in order to use this new upgrade.
  • The Face Impact Location software price is $499. It does not come with the Mevo+ unit. It is software sold separately and must be added on.
  • According to FlightScope, it will be available some time in February when they update their app to provide the feature.
